"Back To Bedlam" in 2006, which featured the huge worldwide hits "You're Beautiful"

He is touring New Zealand again and is hitting the big stages this time, performing in

Wellington on 29 April at the TSB Arena and in Auckland on 30 April at Vector Arena.
James' newest album, which was released last year, is titled "All The Lost Souls"

history of 50 Years of Rock and Roll !

ROCKONZ ROCK AND ROLL FESTIVAL

Rock and Roll Stars of the 60’s converge on Christchurch

Christchurch is gearing up to celebrate 50 years of achievement by
the local teenagers who got their initiation to Rock and Roll music through the Christchurch Teenage club.

In the 1950’s there were very few places teenagers could gather to listen
and dance to rock and roll music. The local Press of the times, highlighted
teenage boredom, (with nowhere for them to meet other than
with church groups), as a factor in perceived teenage rebellion.
This meant teenagers gathered in Cathedral Square which culminated
in a confrontation between Police, (plus the army Territorials) and teenagers in Cathedral Square in 1957.

Ileen and Jim Merritt, the parents of Max Merritt, the  local teenage
“King” of Rock and Roll, got together with Trevor King, a Kerridge Theatre
Manager, to set up the Sunday afternoon Christchurch Teenage club.
Max Merritt and the Meteors played there regularly and built up a huge following with the local teenagers.

From the love of music fostered through the club, many of the
teenagers started their own bands and set out on their 50 year careers
playing and singing, starting with the powerful music of the times.  Many of
these reached national and international acclaim with Ray Columbus and
the Invaders being the first New Zealand performers to make a
“Number One Hit” in both Australia and New Zealand at the same time.
Max Merritt and the Meteors gained a huge following in Australia as did Peter Williams of The Groove.

These performers are now converging in Christchurch to celebrate their
lives and their achievement with the local community and their peers at the Rockonz Festival.

Among those performing in Christchurch, some coming from the
United States and Australia with their families, (many at their own expense) are:

Max Merritt and the Meteors, Ray Columbus and the Invaders, Dinah Lee,
Tony Williams, Peter Williams, Cecile and Dion Murphy, Paul Muggleston
of the Secrets, Peter Nelson and the Castaways, The Vigilantes, Dave La Planche,
John Campbell of the Detours and John Parker of the Downbeats.
These will perform at the Saturday night concert/dance party under the eye
of Jon McCrea the Master of Ceremonies (previously known as Jonathon J).

Peter Williams, Pat Kearns, Phil Garland of the Playboys,
Norm Bland of Rhythm and Bland will perform at the Sunday night Rockonz
Hall of Fame concert where some of the artists will receive awards
and  be inducted into the Rockonz Hall of Fame website which will go live at the ceremony.

Those being inducted will give a short bird’s eye view of their career
and perform their favorite number. Trevor King QSM, will meet up with
friends he helped start on their world wide careers. All will take part in
a Classic Car Parade on the Free Fun day in Victoria Square Saturday 24th March,
at the beginning of the Festival. They will be welcomed to the City by the
Mayor Garry Moore, on their arrival to the Victoria Square Amphitheatre at midday.

Cecile Murphy, who with her husband Dion Murphy, conceived the idea
and are working to make it happen says: “In a rush of blood
to the head, I had this vision of celebrating the lives of the local teenagers
who were our peers of the time. As Dion and I have been performing
music since 1958, it was what made us who we are. The musicians
we know, all gave countless hours of their lives bringing entertainment
to the lives of the local community. The Festival is a celebration of all those
good times which were unique in that they heralded the start of the
Rock and Roll era which still continues today”.

of the exhibitors typically taking part in this expo. Health and wealth issues, fashion, beauty, the home,
education, and leisure - it will all be there.

The Women's Lifestyle Expo aims to stimulate the imagination of women of all ages, and with over
160 exhibitors, everyone attending is assured of a great time.

exclusively for women - Many of the exhibitors are men and those going along to the expo are
encouraged to bring along their partners as well.

This expo has really struck a chord through its personal approach and ability to
feature items not normally seen at other exhibitions.

Meet TRACEY RICHARDSON at Contours City Gym

There are many tales of triumph over adversity,
but you are unlikely to hear as compelling a story
than this inspirational New Zealander, Tracey

Richardson, who has just launched her searingly
frank and honest autobiography, Going the Distance.

Tracey shot to fame in 2004 when she crossed the
finish line of the grueling Ironman New Zealand triathlon,
which she completed to raise money and

awareness for Cystic Fibrosis (CF).

The image of Tracey Richardson collapsing into the
arms of her two eldest children – who both have this
devastating terminal genetic condition – was

printed in newspapers and magazines and shown
again and again on New

Zealand television.

Tracey is NOT an elite athlete; she is a mum who
 juggles her hectic life to

stretch her limits and find what she is made of. However,
she did receive many accolades for her services to the
community, she is also the cheery face of the 2005/06
Special K Duathlon campaign, and she is a much

sought-after motivational speaker.

Don’t miss this chance to hear this 41-year old,
super mum to six, tell her truly inspirational and amazing

story - a personal story of success despite ongoing
adversity and seemingly insurmountable odds; a story of
how focus and passion can actually change lives.

Robert Lamm To Launch His Latest CD In New Zealand

I am so proud that Robert Lamm has decided to launch his

latest CD in New Zealand, only because he loves New Zealand !

Simple things that we take for granted, like our sheep cross a rural road, enjoying fish and chips at Akaroa- mean so much to people like Robert and Joy !

Frankly, we can not thank Robert enough as he sent me autographed t- shirts and caps-all signed the all band members of Chicago.

Through my Zonta club, one item sold for $500,with Cholmondeley Children's Home being the recipient of the proceeds at Christchurch Casino's Charity Auction.

Royal NZ Foundation of the Blind also benefited from another similar auction.
Thank you so much Robert !

Former Beach Boys, so taken by our country , when they performed at Hokitika Wild Food Festival, that they invited Robert Lamm and his lovely wife, Joy and singer / songwriter Andy Kim.

I had the pleasure of having Beach Boys, Robert and Andy on my breakfast television show- all together ! That was the first time they were on television show anywhere in New Zealand- the lot of them....in March 2002..

Foundations were laid then for Robert's return with Element Music.

Having to re-arrange my schedules, my flight is booked to join our dear friend, the founder of Chicago band, Robert Lamm's new CD launch,
at Sky City Theatre, Auckland on 4 February.

We are honoured to be invited by Robert!
This concert will be recorded globally for the release of Subtlety & Passion- Somewhere Girl.

It will feature Robert's best loved hits from
Does Anybody Know What Time It Is and Saturday In The Park and of course his latest !

An event of the Wellington Music Week 19-26 October, 2003

The Wellington Music Week is a Wellington Regional Arts / Music industry event occurring from 19th – 26th October.
Organised by M.I.D.I  (Music Industry Development Initiative) Trust this event is actively supported by the Wellington City Council.

WELLINGTON INTERNATIONAL SONGWRITERS EVENT
Oikos Records is a small independent record label, which will be participating in the Wellington Music Week.

Oikos will be managing the "Wellington International Songwriters" event “not-for-profit” in support of local artists as an altruistic focal point during the week.

Oikos will run a series of Open Mic events essentially as auditions leading to and ultimately culminating in a "best of" performance to be held during the Wellington Music Week. We encourage other record labels to use this event for their own A&R or to develop their artists.

Substantial Prizes will be awarded to entice artists and create a competitive element.

http://sharonlingham.com/who%20can%20enter.jpg
Artists who reside within the Greater Wellington Region are invited to audition for the event irrespective of whether they are signed or unsigned, regardless of genre, style or form of expression.

The only criteria is that the music is original and the performance meets an international standard.

SPONSORSHIP
We primarily seek your help to get word out...However, any prizes relating to the production or lifestyle of music and reimbursement for any regional advertising costs could also be of help.

Oikos Records will be sponsoring the use of recording equipment and human resource costs throughout the process, which includes “Open Mic” Auditions over 5 Sundays leading up to a final concert to be held at CHEVY’s in Dixon Street, Wellington.

The rider includes JBL sound system, RODE Vocal Mic, KORG D1600 digital mixing desk / recorder.

Music City and the Wellington Music Academy are also underwriting and supporting the event. Whilst the existing sponsors obviously aim to gain their own promotional value, Oikos is equally keen to add value to other contributors who would like to be involved and it is still possible to "shuffle" prizes according to their value and stature.

Oikos is enthusiastic about working in joint venture partnership with other industry stakeholders Understanding the solidarity will increase the overall value of the event.

Thursday, 15 to Sunday 25 January, 2004.

This summer the largest street festival in Australasia returns to Christchurch – the 11th Annual New Zealand Community Trust World Busker’s Festival – from Thursday, 15 to Sunday 25 January, 2004.

“The middle of January is a great time for the Festival as 70 percent of our audience are local residents”, says Festival Director, Jodi Wright. “The holidays are over and the Festival makes the first two weeks back much more entertaining.”

Performers are sourced by special invitation and from over two hundred applications. This year’s acts will include street performance, theatre and circus arts, and comedy and cover the spectrum from the absurd to the sublime.

“The Festival has enjoyed exceptional growth since its inception and continues to gather momentum. This year we’re looking forward to another fantastic line up of talent”, says Wright.

The Festival’s programme will include daytime and night time performances.

Individual shows will be scheduled throughout the day at more than a dozen Christchurch locations, including Cathedral Square, the Arts Centre and City Mall.

All events will be free, relying on the tradition of voluntary donations, and no bookings are necessary.

The Festival was founded in 1994 by Festival Trust – a charitable trust established to foster the arts by producing high profile and accessible arts-based events.

The 2004 World Buskers Festival is core funded by the Christchurch City Council and sponsored by the New Zealand Community Trust, The CPIT, The Christchurch Press, Montana Wines Ltd., The Arts Centre of Christchurch, Radio network, the Loaded Hog, Phantom, Mcrory Thomas Travel and KPMG.

The festival is the recipient of grants and donations from the Lion Foundation, The Community Trust, Bendigo Valley Trust, The Southern Trust, Pub Charity, Community Grants Foundation, The Canterbury Foundation, Pub Charity, ASIA 2000 Foundation, NZJEP, The United States Embassy, Creative Communities and a variety of other supporters both in kind, contra and financial contributors.

http://sharonlingham.com/mike%20king%20tonight%20show.jpgMike King TONIGHT is an up-to-the-minute, topical, 9.30pm chat show starring Mr Mike King and featuring the irreverent comedy style that has made him a household name.

The show is built around an established star, and - in the style of David Letterman - it follows the tried and true classic chat show format.

Recorded weekly in front of a live studio audience, Mike King TONIGHT is a hip mix of studio guests, stand-up comedy, live music, field items and recurring comic characters.

Mike King writes a lot of the material, supported by a strong team of writers and contributors.

The show is an 'occasion': a big event with top entertainers and a live band. It is taped in a TV theatre with an audience of several hundred people.

There is a simple and functional set - host's desk, interview chairs, performance area, band area. The studio is lit well but not brightly, to give a sophisticated night-time look.

Mike King TONIGHT is a television landmark for New Zealand: at last, a mature weekly entertainment programme showcasing our top talent, and presenting a specifically New Zealand point of view.

Mike King is one of the few people with the ability to host such an important show.

A weekend of pampering and relaxation for our wonderful "Mums" of special needs children  was held on Sat 7 and 8 Sept.

This is a combined service project by the Altrusa Clubs of Christchurch and Pegasus to say a big thank you to these " Magic Mums" and let them know the community thanks they are wonderful.

When there is a special needs child in the family, the person who copes with it all on a day to day basis, is usually the Magic Mum who often puts herself last when the time and choices, opportunities and purchases are being decided.

The women selected by Life Links will meet at the Cotswold Hotel for morning tea before hair do's and facials by the Christchurch Academy and time for relaxation.

A tour of the city by night in Crown Limousines will precede dinner at the Christchurch Casino. A gift basket of items generously donated by businesses in Christchurch, will be given to each "MUM" after lunch at the Merrin St Wine Bar to add the final touch to the weekend.

http://sharonlingham.com/NZ%20charity%20concert.jpgOnce again, Rotary of Huntly are hosting the show and this will be our fourth concert. Over the past years it has been my pleasure to introduce audiences to the finest talent New Zealand has to offer. We have such a wealth of talent in this country  -  both old and new and unless we support these shows and the artists themselves, we will probably end up losing them to overseas where the grass is greener.

This show is a Charity Concert and all proceeds from the show after expenses will go to Rotary District 9930 Spinal Cord Cure Appeal.

http://sharonlingham.com/Altrusa124.gifAltrusa Peace Quilt In Christchurch Hands  http://sharonlingham.com/blnkstr.gif

The Peace Quilt would be officially launched by
 the Christchurch Deputy Mayor,
Carole Evans on Tuesday 10 May at the Council
 Lounge-ground floor at 5.30pm.

Altrusa International Club of Christchurch was the
successful bidder for Altrusa Peace Quilt and is proud
to be the owner for a year.
At the Altrusa International’s District Fifteen Conference
held in Queenstown in May 2003, the Hibiscus
Coast Club put out a challenge to all other clubs
within the New Zealand, to participate in the making
of a Peace Quilt.
Each club purchased a fabric pack and were asked to
make a 10” square, depicting their area.

23 New Zealand Altrusa clubs and one American
member, Mary Check- a career exchange member,
took part in making the quilt.
Once put together, it was amazing to see how many
different designs could be created out of the same
fabric- each being so unique!
The quilt is auctioned every year at the ‘District
Fifteen’  conference with the successful
club enjoying the quilt for a year.
In the first year, the funds were used for producing
tactile books for sight impaired children at the
 Tauranga Visual Resource Centre.
It will be a privilege to promote Altrusa International
through this most magnificent work of art with its
nationwide involvement, and we are very fortunate
to have Christchurch City Council's support.
Deputy Mayor Carole Evans has kindly offered to
support us- Councillor Evans being a former
member of Altrusa Pegasus herself.

Christchurch Club was the successful bidder
purchasing the quilt for $750.00 from the club ‘Taeri Altrusa’.

Christchurch Altrusa members Helen Bartlett and
Marion Parlane designed the patch which represents Christchurch.
The Peace Quilt would be officially launched by the Christchurch
Deputy Mayor, Carole Evans on Tuesday 10 May at the
 Council Lounge-ground floor at 5.30pm.
Altrusa will display the quilt at major venues including
libraries so people can enjoy the artwork at the same time
to profile Altrusa
Altrusa International is a group of professional and
 business women supporting numerous charities
in the community.

Altrusa projects include new linen for Holly House,
Magic Mums - honouring mums with children with
psychiatric disabilities, providing seating & purchasing ,
planting trees at Halwsell Quarry, supporting
Burwood Day Care Centre for the elderly, library
projects for three primary schools, Portsmouth
Kindergarten…..to name  few!
People are amazed to know that the quilt makes
money every year when auctioned for charity at the
 conference.
New members are always welcome!

Official Opening of Christchurch Women’s Refuge Community Offices

The Community Offices of Christchurch Women’s Refuge will be opened by Ruth Dyson M P on Friday 4th December 2005. The move, into Community Offices has occurred following restructuring made necessary by the increased community work of the refuge and the need to be more available to the wider public. Refuge work from Community Offices is  now quite common in other parts of New Zealand.

The Christchurch Women’s Refuge works with women and children providing education, information and choices that allow them to develop strategies for living fulfilled lives free from violence. Family violence affects people from all sectors of the community, all socio-economic groups, ethnicities, ages, level of mental well-being and abilities. Christchurch Women’s Refuge has appropriate services for women and children across each area of the community, including Residential Support, Individual Counseling, Group Education Programs and a 24hour crisis support phone line. We also have a strong focus on wider community education and development, including speaking to community groups.

Isolation is a major contributing factor to the abuse of women and children.  When there is access to support from families and the wider community, women and their children are better able to participate in community life and have a greater sense of belonging and identity. Christchurch Women’s Refuge supports women to access the resources in their community and many women, once free from abuse, have a strong desire to contribute in the areas of Social services or voluntary sector.

Women’s Refuge is also proactive in supporting women and children to relocate from violence and works closely with Housing NZ and other agencies providing housing options. Additionally, women are supported to follow the appropriate legal process so that they, and their children, can stay in a home free of violence.  We also work with Work and Income New Zealand to ensure that low income families are receiving their full entitlements to meet adequate living standards.

Christchurch Women’s Refuge has a strong focus on cultural diversity and prioritises Parallel Development. This is demonstrated through our relationships
with Otautahi Women’s Refuge, Shakti Ethnic Services, Refuge and Migrant Service and the Pacific Trust.

White Ribbon Day –25 November

United Nations International Day for the

Elimination of Violence Against Women

White Ribbon Day is the largest effort by men across the world, working in partnership with women, to end men’s violence against women.

On November 25 each year, the United Nations leads a worldwide strategy to encourage men to wear White Ribbons as a declaration of commitment to non-violence in all relationships.  The day relies on support from men and women and their organisations and from business, industry and government too.

Wearing a white ribbon is a personal pledge to not commit, condone nor remain silent about violence against women and children.  White ribbons are worn by men who want to encourage other men to speak out against violence towards women, and by women who are supporting men.

UNIFEM New Zealand, the United Nations Development Fund for Women, is introducing this campaign this year, 2004 by focusing on key organisations to promote White Ribbon Day and all that it stands for.

What can I do to help?

·        Advertise White Ribbon Day in the internal publications, announcements, noticeboards or intranets of your workplace or organisation

·        Put an IDEVAW logo or e-Ribbon on your workplace or personal website or intranet

·        Encourage others throughout your community to join in

·        Order and distribute White Ribbons in your workplace or other networks

·        Make a donation to help with the costs of the campaign

White Ribbons with cards, available from 15 November, may be requested by email or fax  [see below]

UNIFEM New Zealand is a totally voluntary organisation.

To encourage the widest possible participation in this campaign and thanks to some generous support for this initiative there is no charge for the ribbons; however, we would be delighted to receive a koha / donation to assist us to cover the costs of this campaign.

Women' Lifestyle Expo 25-26 September
Westpactrust Centre
10.00am-5.00pm Saturday & Sunday

Everything that a woman wants to be pampered with....will be on display.

Variety is what has made the Women's Lifestyle Expo the major attraction it has become. Where else can you find information about midwifery services, finance, education and parenting alongside stands selling specialty chocolates, lingerie and jewellery? And that's just scratching the surface of the exhibitors typically taking part in this expo. Health and wealth issues, fashion, beauty, the home, education, and leisure - it will all be there.

This expo has really struck a chord through its personal approach and ability to feature items not normally seen at other exhibitions. Exhibitors range from community groups to service providers, crafts people to retailers who will all be aiming to prove there's so much for women to do, learn, enjoy and become part of.

The Women's Lifestyle Expo aims to stimulate the imagination of women of all ages, and with over 100 exhibitors, everyone attending is virtually assured of learning something more about themselves or what they can achieve. There are a lot of things that women can be involved in that don't cost money and a lot of things they can improve their life with that cost only a small amount.

This expo promises to provide practical, fascinating and ingenious products and services, the expo is something the area's women cannot afford to miss. But, it is in no way an event exclusively for women. Many of the exhibitors are men who promote services or products that are of interest or relevance to women and those going along to the expo are encouraged to bring along their partners. Men can learn so much about their partners and the issues they face and how important it is for them to look after themselves.

Check out the Events Calendar for the dates and locations of these Expos.

http://sharonlingham.com/Zonta%20fundraising%20Dinner.jpgRaising The Roof For Cholmondeley Children's Home- September 11

On Thursday, September 11 Zonta Club of Christchurch & Canterbury held a fundraising dinner in the aide of Cholmondeley Children's Home.

Zonta will assist in 'raising the roof for the home. (Zonta is an international organisation for business and professional women.)

Rob Penney was the guest speaker and will give us the inside story of our favourite Canterbury Rugby team.

When Robert Lamm, the founder of Chicago band visited Christchurch in March last year, he was very touched by a local business woman's dedication for fund raising that he sent her a Chicago t-shirt, autographed by all members of the band.

As ambassador of international and local entertainers, Sharon Lingham does not only promote the artists, and happily shows them around the country, she also has a way of assisting charitable organisations by involving visiting artist to autograph items which she donates for fund raising.

"It is a win win situation for both the entertainers as well as the cash strapped organisations".

"I'm most grateful to Robert as I realize that members of Chicago are scattered all over USA and it's a great gesture on his part", says Sharon, who is a member of Zonta.

Lamm obviously enjoyed his time here with his wife, Joy as he signs the company autograph as

" You made our visit to NZ unforgettable".

Sharon and David Lingham of Crown Limousines are willing to part with this priceless gift from the legendary singer and hope to get a great bid on behalf Zonta Club.

"We've been asked to sell it on Ebay and others advise us to hang on to the t-shirt as in time it will be even more valuable but it will be sold to the highest bidder on Thursday".

http://sharonlingham.com/images/Groove%20is%20in%20the%20arts.jpgIn collaboration with RDU98.5FM, the Christchurch Arts Festival is proud to present Groove is in the Arts - nine nights of contemporary electronic music produced and performed by established and emerging New Zealand producer/DJs.

Running every Thurs Fri and Sat nights from 10.30pm during the Festival in the TV ONE Pavilion, Victoria Square, Groove is in the Arts will create a novel, exciting late night ambience within the TV ONE Pavilion programme.

Festival Director Guy Boyce is pleased to add this extra dimension to the heart of the Festival in the TV ONE Pavilion.  “We are always looking to develop new audiences within the Festival.

This is yet another sector of the vibrant New Zealand music industry that we are able to include in our programme for 2003 and it highlights the quality and diversity of our local artists.”
”The opportunity to work with the Christchurch Arts Festival and provide a showcase of local musical talent is fantastic,” said Steve Bowden, RDU Station Manager.  A major component of the station’s on-air sound is New Zealand music and electronica is a rapidly growing genre. The Programme consists of the latest in DJ talent, with names like The Nomad (originally from Christchurch), 50Hz & Rhian Sheehan (Wellington) and South Pacific Soul.
