Christchurch Businesses Rally Around
Tourists
Christchurch businesses
rally around the five remaining
five tourists who were attacked recently.
Deputy Mayor, Mr. Norm Withers was overcome by the
generosity of Canterbury businesses who offered their services
to make the tourists' stay as memorable as possible. They
include Crown Limousines NZ Ltd, Centre Hotel,
and AMI Stadium.
They will also meet Crusaders tomorrow when they play against The Blues
at Ami Stadium.
If you have not already bought the tickets, be sure to do so you and
your family
can watch Richie McCaw, Dan Carter, Ali Williams and team take on the
best from around the Southern Hemisphere.
Witness first hand the entertaining
style of rugby that has made the
Crusaders the most successful franchise
in Super Rugby history-all happening on
Anzac Day.
You will also notice a new Eastern stand
called Deans Stand-named after Deans'
family.
Bob Deans is one
of the most famous All Blacks (1905 –
1908) and captained the Canterbury rugby
team.
Bruce and Robbie
Deans were stalwarts of the Canterbury
rugby team
which held the Ranfurly Shield for 25
challenges and also represented the All
Blacks with great distinction.
They both played in the 1985 Ranfurly
Shield defence against Auckland, which
became known as the ‘match of the
century’, and Robbie has an unparalleled
record as a coach and manager.
Did You Know ?
That the Deans Family is not only our
first family of rugby, but also the
first
successful settler family of our province, with brothers John and William
Deans having built their first house at
Riccarton in 1843? ( now Riccarton House
in Kotare Road, Christchurch).

Did You Know The Following About Teenagers ?
It
was teenagers who were using social networking sites, instant messaging
and other technologies, well before older generations caught on.
-
93% of teenagers are online –
so pretty much all of them.
-
Only 14% of teens send email
every day making it the most unimportant form of social
communication queried.
-
Nearly two thirds (64%) are
content creators. They create blogs, work on personal or
other Webpages, share artwork or videos online and remix
existing content.
-
Social networking sites are
the hubs of content-creating activity with 55% having a
social network profile. Older teens (15-17) are more likely
to have such a profile with older girls leading the way with
70% compared with older boys at 57%
-
27% of online teens say they
create or work on their own Webpages compared to just 14% of
those people 18 and over
-
28% of online teens report
that they create their own blog
-
Half of all online teens
(49%) now read the online journals or blogs of others and
this rises to 58% of older teens (15-17).
-
Two thirds (66%) of teens
with an online profile say they restrict access to it in
some way.
-
Online teen boys are twice as
likely to post video files online, 19% vs 10% for girls

Dancing With The Stars as Opposed to
So You Think You Can Dance
I really love
watching New Zealand's own Dancing With The Stars
but I do not agree with the way our judges criticise the
competitors.
Take for example
"You don't have a
pulse", says Paul Mercurio to Martin Devlin
"As sexy as a plank", says Craig
Revel-Horwood
I love the encouragement from Jason Gunn and Candy Lane. Alison Leonard
is not too bad as she is careful what she says.
I love the Australian So
You Think You Can Dance, because the judges if anything, inspire the
contestants and not ridicule them.
I commend those chosen 'celebrities' who come forward out of their
comfort zones and do endure so much in the name of charity. Most
of them do not know how to dance in the first place.
So judges, go on easy on our contestants!
Well done everyone who took part in this series of DWS.

Standing Ovations For Split Enz in Christchurch
Phoenix Foundation was the support band for Split Enz at Westpac Trust
Arena,
Christchurch. If I could only hear what they were singing , would have
been great
but the sound system let them down.
By the time
Split Enz came on
stage, the sound had improved dramatically.
About 7,500 packed the arena
eager to hear the Finn brothers- (Tim and Neil Finn)
along with
Eddie Rayner (keyboards), Noel Crombie (percussion) and Nigel Griggs
(bass).
Beginning with Shark Attack
then Poor Boy,
the show continued....
One Step Ahead
and Give It A
Whirl,
Dirty Creature, I Got
You, Matinee Idyll, Pioneer,
Six Months In A Leaky Boat, I See Red,
My
Mistake's ,I
Hope I Never.
Noel Crombie, famous for his 'spoon play' wowed
the audience.
I remember having Noel and Eddie on CTV breakfast show in 2003.
Ironically, I sat next the Classic Hits 97.7 FM's winner, Kate, who
won tickets to Jimmy Barnes, Jack Johnson and of course Split Enz
concerts and also travelled to all the shows in one of Crown Limousines!
Encore
after encore, the boys kept coming back according to the
public demand.
It was a wonderful show with standing ovations at the end.

RadioLIVE
Presents
Lyttleton Port Company Long Lunch for
the Ronald McDonald House

Kathy (Vision Aluminium), Sharon ( Crown Limousines) & Saskia
Hargreaves (More FM)
RadioLIVE
Canterbury presented
the Lyttleton Port Company Long Lunch on
Friday for the Ronald McDonald House South Island.-
hosted by
RadioLIVE's
Willie Jackson and John Tamihere.
This
fantastic event not only celebrated the very best Cantabrian
food and wine, but also presented a magnificent business
opportunity - corporate networking,
also supporting such a worthwhile charity- the Ronald McDonald
House South Island.
Wonderful array of celebrity autographed
items were up for grabs in the silent auction.
It was great to see some of the local businesses supporting this
event.
David and I
enjoyed the lunch ( in between our jobs).
I envied anyone who headed home or anywhere but their office as
I did..
We were $710.00 lighter as we
bought Crusaders’ 2006 win- signed framed t-shirt.
Our voucher fetched another $275.00.
I will decide later which charity will benefit from this
purchase.

Best Female Singers

Janet Jackson has, unquestionably,
had a little bit to do with influencing women artists (and men,

Pop Music -Gloria
Estefan
Shakira is hot right now (and has been for a while), when all is
said and done, Estefan's influence has been huge, first with
Miami Sound Machine, then later on her own.
Salsa- Cecelia
Cruz
Tejano- Selena
Selena is the first person - male
or female - to bring tejano music to the attention of the world.
Her last concerts and albums are still number one sellers on the
charts.
Reggaeton / Hi Hop- Ivy Queen
The bad boys of reggaeton step back when the Ivy Queen comes
around. Ivy Queen helped define the genres of Latin hip hop and
reggaeton, standing toe to toe with the bad boys.
Brazillian - Diva of Divas
Elis Regina was Brazil's Diva of
Divas until her death in 1982. They say Brazil almost stopped
functioning when she died. Then there was Maria Bethania !
Ranchera- Lola Beltran
Lola Beltran reigned supreme for decades until her death in
1996. It's difficult to think of any woman more influentual than
Lola. Rocio Durcal was a close runner-up.
Afro - Cuban- Omara
Portuondo
Omara is the most recognizable name in the world today in
the area of Cuban
son. That's probably a
result of her appearance on the original Buena Vista Social
Club album.
Merengue's
-
Dominican Milly Quezada
Although Merengue is properly from the Dominican Republic,
Puerto Rico's Tanon has broadened merengue's huge world appeal.
Banda-
Graciela Beltran
Graciela
Beltran started in ranchera (like mother Lola) but as the banda
movement gained momentum, she nudged over and became 'La Reina
Del Pueblo".Yose follow include Ana Barbara and Alicia Villareal.
Rock - Andrea
Echeverri
As part of Colombia's Aterciopelados, Echeverri has been
defining 'Rock en Espagnol' since the name was invented.
Echeverri is much more than the token 'girl', rather a leader in
the Colombian rock movement.
Jazz Queens
Norah Jones
- Singer and
pianist has built a successful career by bridging jazz and pop.
Last year's Higher Ground hurricane benefit album
featured her moving rendition of Randy Newman's "I Think it's
Going to Rain Today." And this month Jones plays on the
self-titled debut by The Little Willies. For adventurous Norah
Jones fans who want to explore her jazzy side, here are some
other suggested artists
Cassandra
Wilson is one of the leading vocalists in jazz. She has
great taste in material, spanning everything from classic jazz
to the best American roots music. A guitarist as well as a
singer, her influences include bluesman Robert Johnson, rocker
Joni Mitchell, and jazz greats like Ella and Sarah Vaughan. Look
out for her latest album thunderbird produced by T-Bone
Burnett (Blue Note Records).
Karen Hunter-
Dargaville, ( North Island) New Zealand
Fri 14 Mar 08, 9:00pm
With a string of
accolades as one of New Zealand's most engaging and compelling
at
Dargaville Commercial Hotel,
Dargaville,
New Zealand
Madeleine
Peyroux -.
Chart-topping vocalist has wowed audiences around the
world with her canny emulation of Billie Holiday. Last summer,
Peyroux befuddled the jazz world when she mysteriously
disappeared in Europe, only to reappear weeks later in New York
claiming that she was stressed out. Nevertheless, her singing
hasn't suffered as evidenced by her fine performance of
"Hesitation Blues" on Larry Golding's latest Palmetto release
Quartet.
Billie Holiday,
like Norah Jones, was able to convey a wide range of emotion
with a relatively simple vocal style. While Jones's voice is
more easily approachable, Holiday's instrument still holds
enormous sway over jazz singing, as evidenced by the work of
contemporary jazz singers.

Sunday- A very Special Stephanie Allen's 16th Birthday Party
I had to rush back to the office after
Rockonz Concert as we still had a huge night ahead of us at Crown
Limousines. I went to bed at 2.30am then as I arranged with someone that
I would bring an autographed item from Shane Cortese-that meant having
to catch him before he flew home at 6.00am! Stephanie adores Shane.
We left for Southbridge Town Hall to
attend a 16th birthday party for the wonderful Stephanie Allen.
Her birthday is not till May but unfortunately, Stephanie may not last
that long as she has brain tumor.
Thanks to Win A Wish Foundation and Suzanne Carson of
Events Professionals, it was possible to have some 300 people celebrate
Stephanie's birthday in style. Local
businesses supplied goods and service for this party.
It irks me to come across all these wonderful young people who have the
whole life ahead of them ;yet life seem to be snatched away from
them..... I feel so helpless!
I did not realise that I had to present all signed goodies to Stephanie on
stage. However, that gave me the opportunity to promote Rockonz to the
audience!
It was a very moving and emotional event for us all.
My great friends from Too Chic Entertainment ( Kim and Grieg) were there
along with various local entertainers..
60 Minutes-
television covered some of the highlights
of the party.
I was very much impressed with Davy and team from Common Ground-
a break-dance group. They competed in Germany and won the 'Battle of the
Year' competition.
If you are looking for young entertainers-you will not be disappointed!

The ROCKONZ Concert Dance
At Christchurch Town Hall -Saturday 1 March
Dion & Cecil
Murphy
If you love rock 'n' roll, you would have
done yourself a huge injustice by not being at Christchurch Town Hall on
Saturday night.
It featured Johnny Devlin & the Tornados,
Suzanne Lynch, About Time, Peter Williams, Pat Kearns, Brian Ringrose,
Cecile and Dion Marsh and finally really rocking the house- Shane Cortese with Chet O'Donnell & Class of 58 Band!
I just love having good times and not into serious dancing, and it Dion
and Cecil certainly put David and I on spot showing some moves....well
may be another time- that is my excuse!
From 7.30pm till 11.10 pm, it was just amazing and rock
'n' roll dancers everywhere and great singers abound, who would want to
go home anyway?
And did I mention that you missed out on the fun?
01.03.08
Stay tuned
for
photos.

Rockonz Hall of Fame Awards 2008 At Christchurch
Casino
Rockonz organisers,
Cecil and Dion Murphy
should be really proud of all events that followed during the whole
week.
Rockoz is a celebration of rock'n'
roll of 50s and 60s.
The celebration included
presentation of
Rockonz Hall of Fame Awards at Christchurch Casino on Friday 28
February.
The well attended gala event included dinner and auction for dual
charities- Breast and Prostrate Cancer.
This event was a huge success.
Three people were awarded the Rockonz Hall of Fame Award by Mayor Bob
Parker for their dedication in
rock 'n' roll- the original rocker
Johnny Devlin,
Southern Star Award. He was supported by the original
1960's Australian Band 'The Tornadoes.
Suzanne Lynch,
also received New Zealand Star
Rockonz Hall of Fame Award.
Lynch would be
remembered from the '60's singing alongside her sister as 'The Chicks'),
has been backing singer and friend to Cat Stevens and is a 'Star' in her
own right with her great voice and music writing.
Tap Heperi-
also received the International Star Hall of Fame Award. I understand he
lives in Austria.
The youngest entertainer
Shane Cortese,
star of Stage and Television (Shortland Street, Dancing with the
Stars and Outrageous Fortune) received the Ambassador of
Rockonz Award. Shane had no knowledge of the award.
I already knew about it though!
Shane has a passion for Rock 'n' Roll and
it shows in his renditions of past Rock 'n' Roll greats such as Buddy
Holly, Elvis and others, backed by his 'Class of 58' well known
musicians in their own right.
Shane very excitedly told the audience that his ladylove, Nerida ( Dancing with the Stars) had
accepted his proposal to marry him. Naturally, he is over the moon!
Both Suzanne and Shane sat at our table.
Our local Councillors also actively took part in the auction and
entertained the guests ( no, not by
singing)!
