Boz Scaggs, Michael McDonald & the Mick Fleetwood Blues Band

Boz Scaggs Michael

Wed 3 Mar, 6.00pm
Westpac Arena, Christchurch
For tickets contact Ticketek – 0800 TICKETEK .

Five-time Grammy Award winner Michael McDonald joins singer/songwriter Boz Scaggs to perform their greatest hits, along with songs from their latest albums for three NZ shows in Auckland, Napier and Christchurch this March.

Hot on the heels of two sold-out NZ Fleetwood Mac shows, Mick Fleetwood and his band will accompany these legends to perform Mick Fleetwood Blues Band original material along with Fleetwood Mac songs.

As a member of The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan, Michael McDonald recorded some of his most well-known songs, such as Takin’ It to the Streets, Little Darling, It Keeps You Runnin, Minute by Minute and What a Fool Believes (which became a number one single in the U.S and earned him a 1978 Grammy Award for Song of the Year).

His latest album, Soul Speak, is the natural follow-up to McDonald’s two smash hit explorations of the Motown Records Songbook – the platinum-selling Motown from 2003, nominated for two Grammy Awards, and the following year’s gold-selling Motown Two. McDonald’s latest album doesn’t focus on a particular style; this time, he simply wanted to sing what he loves and bring together tracks like Into the Mystic by Van Morrison with Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah.

Boz Scaggs gained fame in the 1970s with several Top 20 Hits in the U.S along with the #2 album Silk Degrees, which contained the world-wide hit singles, Lido Shuffle, What Can I Say and Lowdown. His latest album Speak Low is the sublime and sexy follow-up to Boz Scaggs’ critically acclaimed 2003 standards collection, But Beautiful. Recorded in four days, with the musicians playing together in the same room, Speak Low is filled with a rare kind of energy that erupts when everyone involved becomes alive to the possibilities of what can happen.

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the release of the first record Fleetwood Mac drummer and founding member Mick Fleetwood brings together a show of unparalleled energy and a true vibe of the ‘60s. Featuring former Fleetwood Mac guitarist and veteran bluesman Rick Vito, bassist Lenny Castellanos, Mark Johnstone on keyboards and with the iconic Mick Fleetwood providing his unmistakable powerhouse percussion style, the Mick Fleetwood Blues Band plays the exact type of music Fleetwood Mac played between the years of 1967 and 1970 – the finest in Blues and Classic Rock & Roll!
On the project Mick said, “I’ve been very excited about the prospect of doing something like this for a 40th Anniversary Tour and I’m so pleased at how it has come together. I can’t wait to see the reactions from the fans – the music is there, the energy is there, all of the pieces fit.”

With three exceptional artists sharing the stage, audiences will be thrilled to hear all of their favourite songs reborn into something intoxicatingly original. Don’t miss it!

13 Most Beautiful Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests

Wellington-born Dean Wareham and wife Britta Phillips, both former members of dream pop/indie group Luna, deliver this effortlessly sophisticated live musical performance to 13 of Andy Warhol’s famous screen tests.

Captured at Warhol’s Silver Factory back in the 1960s, the silent, black and white screen tests include the likes of uber-cool superstars and notorious scenesters Edie Sedgwick, Dennis Hopper and vocalist Nico. A smouldering Lou Reed also makes an appearance – casually sipping a Coke in a laidback tribute to Warhol’s pop art ideals.

The screen tests are projected overhead as Dean, Britta and band perform mostly live new music to each four-minute film segment. The exceptions are some deliciously vintage covers of Bob Dylan and The Velvet Underground, perfectly suited to the whimsical, 60s-infused sound of the chic ensemble. Warhol’s unmatchable style and unique art has been rejuvenated in this rocking live art experience from these stylish ‘genre-shapers’. Don’t miss it.

Old Crow Medicine Show Return to NZ

Old Crow Medicine

“I really love the Old Crow Medicine Show” -Emmylou Harris (Richmond Times – Dispatch)
“I’m really into this band…their live show is amazing and the album OCMS is really special.” -Norah Jones (MOJO)
“It’s so extraordinary to hear a band where there are three good singers; their harmonies remind me of the Dead or the Band.” -Gillian Welch (MOJO)
“The twentysomethings in Old Crow Medicine Show marry old-time string music and punk swagger.” -Rolling Stone

With great joy, Love Police announce the return of the amazing Old Crow Medicine Show to New Zealand in March 2010.

The band first toured New Zealand early in 2009 and left audiences in awe of the musical tour de force that is Old Crow Medicine Show. It’s fast & furious so bluegrass and folk lovers, hipsters and country fans, be prepared to get down in a whole new way once these five boys from Nashville take to the stage.

The band has gone far beyond the label of “Americana” and kicks out good old bluegrass styled music with rock ‘n’ roll attitude. They abandon the overdone country theme of dead dogs and lost women for heart felt get-downs about homegrown weed and trailer dwelling meth heads.

Since meeting in NYC in 1998, the quintet of Willie, Ketch, Critter, Morgan and Gill have progressed from beginnings as travelling buskers to opening for Dolly Parton and touring with Merle Haggard, along with head-lining shows and countless festivals. While the group initially made a name for themselves through the unbridled spirit of their energetic performances and relentless touring, the band has also released three acclaimed albums, clocking up sales of more than 300,000.

It is on the back of their current DVD release ‘Live at the Orange Peel’ and the fantastic reception they received last tour that Old Crow Medicine Show return to New Zealand

THE VOICE OF SUPERTRAMP -Two fabulous NZ concerts

Roger Hodgson

The voice of SUPERTRAMPROGER HODGSON, announces he will perform in WELLINGTON and AUCKLAND on April 13 and 14.

“The highest compliment that Roger can be paid is that he probably sounds better live today than in the recording studio more than a generation ago.” Evening Standard – London, Review from Royal Albert Concert.

Roger Hodgson is the legendary voice, writer and arranger of most of Supertramp’s greatest hits that led to more than 60 million record sales. He gave us amazingly enduring songs like: “Give a Little Bit,” “Dreamer,” “It’s Raining Again”, “Take the Long Way Home”, “The Logical Song,” “Breakfast In America,” “Fool’s Overture” and so many others that have become the sound track of our lives. Hodgson co-founded the progressive rock band Supertramp in 1969 and was with them for 14 years. He wrote, sang and added his distinctive keyboard and guitar sound to most of the classic hits that brought Supertramp worldwide accalim, which is why his solo renditions lose nothing of their original magic.

Roger recently received 2 awards from ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers) for his songs being in the top played songs in their repertory, proving that they have indeed stood the test of time.

“There are few vocalists instantly recognizable from the first few bars of a song but Roger Hodgson is certainly one of that unique group. The singer/songwriter of Supertramp, his voice is as unmistakable as the distinct keyboard sound of his early hits.”
The Times- London, Review from Royal Albert Concert

TOMMY TIERNAN -Crooked Man Tour 2010

AUCKLAND SKYCITY THEATRE MONDAY 26TH APRIL 9.30PM

TICKETS ON SALE MONDAY 15TH FEBRUARY
Multi Award winning Irish Superstar Comic, Tommy Tiernan, tours New Zealand for the first time with his solo show entitled Crooked Man. A fearless force of energy, Tiernan is one of the few comics to take his audience on a genuine emotional journey elevating the soul through rich, honest laughs. Tiernan has an instinctive way of crafting words to bring his anecdotes to vivid life and make the jokes truly resonate. Standing at 5ft 9inches tall in his socks and weighing in at 78kg, this Gemini contrarian is back with his irreverent mix of the wholesome and the totally inappropriate. Performing like a homeless preacher high on the wine of laughter, Tiernan promises both the sacred and the profane wrapped up in a spirit of recklessness.

Fresh from sell out runs in Montreal’s “Just For Laughs”, Boston, Chicago & New York & his third appearance on “The Late Show With David Letterman”. Tiernan’s shows are high intensity, high octane, a no holds barred roller coaster ride as Tommy continues his constant interrogation of the big ideas – Sex, Religion, Family through the lens of his quirks, personal demons and sense of outrage.

Tommy has the highest selling DVD sales in Ireland and is second only to U2 when it comes to live performance ticket sales there. His DVD “Cracked: Live At Vicar Street” went straight to #1 on the week it was released and has reached four times Platinum Status. “Loose” also went straight to #1 and reached eight times Platinum status while “Jokerman: Tommy Tiernan in America” and “Ok Baby” also went to number 1.

In April 2009, Tommy set the Guinness World Record for the longest Stand-up Comedy Show by an individual at a staggering 36 hours and 15 minutes!

His observations about life are offbeat and thoughtful but most importantly, he’s a tremendous storyteller. He will challenge, he will engage and he will definitely entertain.

To spend time in this man’s company is an unmissable treat.

Blues Legend John Mayall

John Mayall

Friday 23rd April, 7:30pmWhere:James Hay Theatre, ChristchurchTicket Information:For tickets contact Ticketek – 0800 TICKETEK
The blues doesn’t get much more exciting than this! John Mayall is of course a pioneering English blues singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. His musical career spans over fifty years, but the most notable episode in it occurred during the late ’60s, when he was the founder of John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers.
As a gifted talent-scout, Mayall has been influential in the careers of many instrumentalists, including Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, Peter Green, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, Mick Taylor, and Don “Sugarcane” Harris.
John was born in 1933 in the small village of Macclesfield near Manchester (as was Ian Curtis of Joy Division). This skinny English lad grew up listening to his father’s jazz record collection and felt drawn to the blues. In the late ’60s John moved to London where he turned professional and went under the name John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. He soon met his soulmate in Eric Clapton, and this historic union culminated in the first hit album for the Bluesbreakers, ‘Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton’ (1966), and resulted in worldwide legendary status. In 1969, with his popularity blossoming in the USA, John released his classic acoustic live album ‘The Turning Point’. Over the years, John has released several albums that have set new standards in rock blues, namely ‘Behind The Iron Curtain’, ‘Chicago Line’, ‘A Sense Of Place’ and the Grammy-nominated ‘Wake Up Call’.
2009 saw the release of John’s 57th album, ‘Tough’, and, as for the man himself, the father of six and the grandfather of six, John Mayall, at 75, hopes to keep the blues alive for many more years to come.

Dance of Desire

Sat 3 Apr, 7.30pm – 10.00pm
James Hay Theatre, Christchurch
Ticket Information
For tickets contact Ticketek – 0800 TICKETEK .
The new All-Irish production Dance of Desire is coming to NZ as part of an extensive world tour.
Produced by Michael Carr of Ceol Chiarrai Productions Dublin, this new show is described as “edgy, somewhat more adventurous than past Irish Dance shows, and full of “A” level championship performers”.

Over the past year the show has played in Paris, New York, Beijing, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur and a record seven month season in Australia. After their end of year break back home, the cast will re-commence their world tour in New Zealand with the first performance in Hamilton March 10th 2010.

Covering 13 New Zealand cities, Dance of Desire boasts a huge cast of 22 dancers and celtic musicians, plus a specialist light, sound and stage crew of 10.
Dance of Desire is described by critics as stunning and amazing. The high voltage, guaranteed all-Irish production challenges the boundaries of other Irish dance productions and has uniquely elevated the world of Irish dance to a new level.

Complete with entirely original music and choreography, from the makers of ‘Spirit of Ireland’ & ‘Dance on the Moon’, Ceol Chiarraí Productions Ltd ground breaking production Dance oF Desire is undoubtedly unique in its imaginative design.

Dance of Desire is a show with everything: colour and light, wonderful original music, clever dramatic content, and incredible dancing that truly pushes the boundaries of choreography and fuses Irish dance seamlessly with Flamenco, Latin American, Middle Eastern, ballet and ballroom styles, with a few acrobatics thrown in. Added to the dazzling dance content and a strongly portrayed storyline, Dance of Desire also has a unique soundtrack composed entirely of original music.

Dance of Desire takes the traditional Irish Celtic myth of the Children of Lir and gives it a treatment reminiscent of the Kirov Ballet’s approach to Swan Lake, turning it into a tale with a happy ending
Special prices will be available for Dance schools, Family Groups and Senior Citizens. Michael Carr says “we are very proud of this, our finest ever show. Despite the state of the world economic climate, we have succeeded in presenting a world class performance within the price range of the average New Zealander – and for a production of this quality, that’s something.”

The Greatest Living Composer, Burt Bacharach, announces new dates for his tour of New Zealand.

The ultra cool, cult hero and his sublime band will now perform at Auckland’s Vector Arena On Friday, November 5 and At Christchurch’s Westpac Arena On Sunday, November 7. The new dates follow last month’s postponement due to Burt having to undergo emergency back surgery.

Existing ticketholders will be contacted as soon as possible to transfer their tickets to the new show dates.

Burt has written more than seventy Classic Top 40 hits with nine Number Ones and forty-eight Top Tens. Mike Myers’ “Lucky Charm” has also contributed to the careers of Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield, Neil Diamond, Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, REM, Sheryl Crow, Gene Pitney and The Beatles.

The phenomenal Bacharach catalogue includes -

Alfie, What’s New Pussycat?, Any Day Now, Blue on Blue, Close To You, Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head, There’s Always Something There to Remind Me, I Say A Little Prayer, Arthur’s Theme, Do You Know The Way to San Jose?, A House is Not A Home, The Look of Love, I’ll Never Fall in Love Again, Message to Michael, That’s What Friends Are For, Trains And Boats And Planes, This Guy’s in Love With You, Only Love Can Break A Heart, Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa, Wives and Lovers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Walk on By, What The World Needs Now Is Love, One Less Bell to Answer and Anyone Who Had a Heart.

“Last time he was here, he wrapped the hearts of everyone in a lovely warm sponge of the lost loves of our pasts, lost loved ones and all those cross roads where our great, emotional train wrecks occurred through the years. A truly profound evening, and like Leonard Cohen – old people can still pack a mighty punch” — Greg Peacock, Oceania.

Whilst on his last visit Downunder, the recipient of three Academy Awards was honoured at the 50th Grammy Awards with the Lifetime Achievement Award (his eighth Grammy) and proclaimed the “Greatest Living Composer” by the Recording Academy.

Burt’s global audiences span several generations, and he is viewed as the unique combination of one of the greatest composers of all time and the ultra-cool cult hero of the contemporary music set who often has several songs on various music charts in many countries simultaneously.

“One of the best and most inspiring concerts I’ve ever seen. That man is a genius,” Simon Gomez, The Radio Network.

Along with Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Paul McCartney and Paul Simon, Burt is a legend of popular music and is regularly bracketed with names ranging from Cole Porter to Sir George Martin, as one of a handful of visionaries who pioneered new forms of music from the second half of the 20th Century and continued into the 21st Century.

You’ll be entranced with every magical and sophisticated moment that is Burt Bacharach as he shares with us the special moments of his long career and the stories behind the songs performed with his magnificent band of musicians and singers.

The elegance, the melodies, the bliss. Don’t Walk on By! Book your seats now
