Christchurch Proved To Be ‘a melting pot’
At Global Extravaganza

Community Events Trust proudly celebrated The Bartercard Global Extravaganza 2008
in style with locals, international dignitaries and government officials
at Victoria Square on Sunday. The event also profiles Christchurch Garden City
as ‘the centre of melting pot”.

The Amphitheatre was transformed in to huge celebration venue with combination of
stylish décor by Acropolis and ethnic setting by Whirl Productions.

The event included cultural performances and fashion showcasing over fifty countries.
Ethnic food stalls, craft information and demonstrations including body,
Hanna painting, also children’s entertainment by Ronald McDonald.

Proceeds from commercial stalls go to the Ronald McDonald House.

Roving MC Brigid McClelland says- “There was a great turn out for the
day and there was also a tremendous sense of pride which came through
from the different nationalities representing their country in either dance
song or fashion.
I feel it was a fun filled family day which I
personally was proud to be a part of
".

Deputy Mayor Norm Withers addressed on behalf of the city.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to give a huge thank to
Sharon Lingham for all the work she has done to bring
this wonderful show to the city”.

Sharon is the president of the Trust and the founder of Global Extravaganza.

The opening of Global Fashion Extravaganza was done by central MP
Nicky Wagner and the Minister of Immigration, Clayton Cosgrove as
the event is about everyone joining forces together.

“I was inspired by the energy and excitement of Global Extravaganza 2008.
It is a great celebration of and for the people of Christchurch.
It's colourful, its vibrant and positive for the future of our city”.
Says Nicky Wagner.

Mr Cosgrove brought greetings from the Prime Minister and also gave
an inspiring speech and later told Newstalk ZB listeners how wonderful the event was.

Z Club from Avonside High School was formally introduced by Mr Withers.
The unique Club focuses on youth developing leadership skills in high schools,
promotes career exploration and encourages members to participate in community,
school and international projects. It‘s aims reflect that of the Community Events Trust’s.

The global fashion show was hosted by Ali Jones of Newstalk ZB. The catwalk
was just sequined of colour galore from the Pacific, Middle East, Asian and European countries.

"It was fantastic to be involved in this celebration of some of the many
cultures in Christchurch. We learn so much from other cultures
and it can be easy to forget the positive side of cultural diversity
with so much negative coverage of racial issues in New Zealand,"
says the Newstalk ZB morning talk host Ali Jones.

Pansy Wong ( Ethnic Affairs), who could not attend Global Extravaganza, said,
" I hope that everyone here today enjoys themselves and embraces what the
Global Extravaganza is all about-accepting each other's cultures and celebrating the
differences-I am a firm believer that we One Nation, Many People (with) Shared values".

Pam Browne from Exquisite Bouquets presented Ali Jones
and Brigit McClelland with especially made bouquets.

Since Jill Dyball of Sydney designed her first diamond and crystal Bouquet in
1999 and it was hailed as the bouquet of the millennium, the bouquets have
gained their place in the bridal industry . Each year more and more
brides are turning to the Crystal Bouquets.

They are different…they are a keepsake…. they are affordable they are the
answer for those with allergies…. they are unique each bouquet is specifically
designed to suit your dress and colours; they are hand made personally by Jill.

They are not available anywhere else in the world, all are designed registered.

April 2006,Jill won the Bronze medal at the Innovators Convention in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Trust thanks everyone including major sponsors - Bartercard NZ and
Crown Limousines NZ Ltd. Also warmly thanks all sponsors ,businesses
and of course the people of Canterbury.

Dear Sharon,

Just wish to say a BIG “Thank you” and “CONGRATULATIONS!” to your very colourful and

successful  “Global Extravaganza” event on 10/2/08!

My BreastScreening South Colleague Hinarata Campin and I were so impressed being
part of this event today that we only regretted that we did not join your event last  year.

Thanks to you, we had a lot of interests from all types of ethnic and Kiwi
Women to take up our free competition entries.  I had 73 entries, Hina from the
BreastScreen South must also have similar numbers.  Hina had to rush off to another work
event so did not have time to count her entries forms before she left.   But she got the prize
drawn before she left.  As she had another job lined up.

I already received thanks from one of the winners of the NCSP prizes.

Look forward to be taking part again in your wonderfully organized event.

Dear Sharon,

Just a note to congratulate you on a great event on Sunday.
We were there from 12.30 until 1.45 and really enjoyed a lovely
Thai lunch and the music and dance, as well as catching up with
a good friend Pat Dugan.

We had another event to attend at 2pm so we missed the
fashion show and the Grande Finale but Norm said it was a great success.
I tried to find you to have a chat, Pat said to look for a lovely red dress,
but I could not see you anywhere at the time.

Anyway congratulations on a job well done and I look
forward to catching up in the future.

Best Regards

Ngaire Button

Our company – Acropolis Wedding Hire Ltd – was invited by Sharon Lingham
to help decorate Victoria Square for the Global Extravaganza, held on Sunday 10th Feb 2008.

We were delighted to receive this invite, as it was for a particularly
good charity. It is also great exposure for our company name.

Sharon once again put a fantastic effort into organizing this event. Even though
Sharon was very busy with this day, she always made the time to answer any of our queries.

Sharon also is very understanding that it takes a great deal of effort to participate in
this event due to the timing -  right in the middle of busy wedding season.

It was wonderful to see the mix of cultures on the day, that make up Christchurch.
Having the fashion event celebrated the individuality of each culture, but also emphasized
the common themes of fashion, kinship, and goodwill amongst different peoples.

This was much more than a celebration of fashion, culture and ethnic foods –
it was a celebration of people and friendship.

Thanks Sharon for making Christchurch proud of its heritage, past,
present and future with this event.

Our thanks goes to Sharon Lingham for the opportunity to
 participate in such an event.

Long may it continue…

Regards
